Plastics: Ubiquitous Utility with Environmental Consequences

Plastics and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

 

Throughout their lifecycle, plastics emit greenhouse gases. Projections indicate that by 2050, these emissions could account for 15% of the global carbon budget. Simultaneously, terrestrial and marine ecosystems are inundated with plastic waste. In 2016 alone, an estimated 19 to 23 million tonnes of plastic entered aquatic ecosystems.

 

Global Initiatives to Combat Plastic Pollution

 

Efforts are underway to address this escalating crisis. The United Nations Environment Assembly adopted a resolution on March 2, 2022, to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment . This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive framework addressing the entire lifecycle of plastics.

 

Regional and National Measures

 

Various regions and countries have implemented measures to curb plastic pollution. The European Union's Single-Use Plastics Directive, effective from July 2, 2021, bans certain single-use plastic products for which alternatives are available . Additionally, at least 127 countries have introduced regulations targeting plastic bags and other single-use items.

 

Exploring Bioplastics as Alternatives

 

Researchers are investigating low-carbon, bio-based materials, known as bioplastics, as potential replacements for fossil fuel-derived plastics. Bioplastics generally present a lower environmental burden than traditional plastics, evidenced by their reduced carbon footprint and enhanced biodegradability . However, challenges persist regarding their durability, the presence of non-degradable components, and production costs.

Bamboo: A Promising Alternative to Single-Use Plastics

 

Bamboo stands out as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics, particularly for single-use items. Its natural strength and rapid renewability make it suitable for replacing products such as straws, cutlery, cups, bowls, and food packaging. These items are among the most emissions-intensive and challenging to recycle, contributing significantly to environmental pollution. Notably, single-use plastics account for approximately 30% to 50% of total plastic consumption globally . By adopting bamboo-based alternatives, we can address a substantial portion of plastic waste and move towards more eco-friendly consumption practices.

 

International feasibility of bamboo production chains

In 2023, INBAR spearheaded a key international pilot project to assess bamboo value chains, which is expected to conclude next year. It investigates genes, cultivation, material properties, products and life-cycle assessments across six countries, representing bamboo-rich areas across the tropical and subtropical belts: Vietnam, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Ecuador and Brazil.

 

Researchers have so far investigated several high-yield bamboo species, including Oxytenanthera abyssinica, Guadua angustifolia (Kunth) and Thyrsostachys oliveri (Gamble), for growth rate, structural characteristics, gene interactions and more. Additionally, an Oxytenanthera abyssinica cultivation manual has been translated into English, to guide training, disseminate knowledge and grow its presence in Africa. And surveys have been conducted to identify which plastic goods are suitable for substitution. In Ethiopia, which has a national bamboo policy framework, they include window blinds, handbags and packaging film.
